Overnight stay at Feligos Guarderia Canina

2021-05-30T18:14:57+00:00

We promised to look after your dogs with the best care and love in a home like environment and without cages. And that’s what we do and we love to see returning customers who are looking forward to see their friends.

Today we would like to give you more insight into the experience of dogs’ overnight stays with us.

There is a big difference for dogs who spent some time with us and those coming for the first time. Returning dogs are more confident, happily say goodbye to their owners and can’t wait to see who is inside. It is obvious dogs also make friends. We at Feligos can never guarantee they will meet again next time after making a perfect playing couple or group as every day is different for us. But the regular customers have a chance to see their best friends again soon! And it is very enjoyable to watch the happiness when they see each other again! Luckily, our space is big enough for crazy runs, jumps and tease over toys. This is the best reward for our hard work 😉

We always recommend to our customers to bring a dog for at least one day stay before they leave him overnight. There is a lot bigger chance he will be calmer, and the experience of boarding will not be so stressful for him. The first night away from his family is always scary and we understand that.

The patter is always similar when boarding dogs. Those staying for their second night are already tired after a day full of games and walks and fall asleep easily like babies. They find the best place for themselves. It may be a blanket in the corner, fluffy doggy bed or a sofa. We don’t tell them where to sleep. There is a room dedicated to relax with many options and we respect their choices.

However, the first night dogs are usually restless, they do not understand what is going on, why they are not going home or where is their bed. They walk around in attempt to continue games, trying to wake up their friends and sometimes they even cry until they fall asleep exhausted. Poor babies! The good news is that in the morning and the second night all is forgotten and every dog calms down and the second night is a peaceful one.

The worst case scenario is to bring the dog for the first time ever to Feligos in the evening and leave him for the night.  We prefer not to do it and do not recommend it to the owners. The first time at Guarderia is always something unknown for the dog and it can take a few hours for them to get used to new people, environment and company of different dogs. Before they become familiar with the new place, there is time to go to bed. The rest of dogs are already tired, not ready to play and the newcomer is full of sadness or energy. And so the first night is even more stressful for him, staff member and the rest of the dogs.

So please believe us when we say it is better to bring your fluffy friend first for a day care stay and if you are leaving him for the night, whether he is regular or not, do not leave the drop off until the evening. It is much better for your loved friend if he has some time to get used to the situation before he goes to sleep.

We are looking forward to seeing you and your dear dogs for days and nights as always.

A day in Feligos Guarderia

2021-05-13T15:41:30+00:00

We are looking for your dogs so that you can arrange your daily life. Whether you need to go for a business appointment, meet with your friends or leave for a weekend, we are here to look after your dog and be as a family for him. There is another reward. You get back a happy dog whose needs were fully covered with us. He was playing, socializing with other dogs, had lots of human love, walks in the park and was fed, if it was his time.

We designed our place to meet dogs need to socialise and play in a safe area with a home feel room for relax and sleep. And we enjoy it too!

Every dog is different and his experience, character and upbringing influence his behaviour and determine the time he gets used to the new environment. Some dogs need to come more often for shorter periods of time before they can be left with us for longer without any trauma. Meanwhile, others jump into a toy box immediately and find their mates for best play ever in a question of minutes.

It is very rewarding and funny to watch our clients play and be a part of their young lives.  Feligos is a perfect place to learn socialising skills, there is always someone to play with and especially young dogs enjoy the space for running, toy box and friends.

We are here to assist the game so that it does not get too crazy and uncontrolled as some of the youngsters are unstoppable in their desire to play at all times. But there is also time to stop the game and relax. Older dogs know when they need their time but the puppies and youngers need us to tell them when it’s time to stop.

After 3 months of operating, we already have regular customers and it is very funny to see the happiness when best friends see each other. Yes, we can see new friendship and love of dogs at Feligos! Our dog clients are pulling the leash down the street to be at Feligos quickly to see who’s there!

Being a regular customer is great for everybody. The owner can leave in peace knowing that his dog is in good hands at Guarderia Feligos,  we know the different characters and behaviour of our regulars and the dogs feel comfortable with us. We know who is a keen player, who likes to be cuddled and also those mischievous who like to tease everybody.

Taking pictures and videos is a part of our daily routine and our clients love to receive them to see funny and happy moments of their dogs. And our Instagram and FB followers are waiting for new contributions to see what’s new at Feligos.

Bring your dog to see how he likes our friendly environment where cages have no space!

Evaluation process

2021-04-14T20:09:44+00:00

Unlike the majority of doggy day care facilities and hotels, we do not have cages for dogs. We want our clients to enjoy free space, play, walk in the park and interact with each other. People often ask how is it possible to mix number of different dogs who never met before. Well, this is why we do these assessments to get to know new clients a little more and give them a chance to explore our place. We watch their behaviour during about 30 minutes sessions while introducing them carefully to other dogs in guarderia. And after having done more than 50 of those evaluations and without generalising, we have seen very similar behaviour of the dogs, no matter of the age, breed or character:

  • Dogs’ behaviour changes rapidly when his owner leaves. While the dog can smell his family behind the door, he is very anxious, trying to get out and often cries or barks. This moment can be very stressful for the owners as they believe their dog is unhappy and miserable, which probably is true.
  • When the owner leaves Guarderia and his smell disappears, the dog starts exploring the place. He sniffs around, carefully greet the other dogs, sometimes, especially the youngers, make a pee on the floor. Even well behaved dogs can do it, it is a sign of anxiety.
  • We introduce the dogs carefully to other clients or to our own dogs at first, usually one by one, not to put him in an even more stressful situation. In case of signs of great fear, we stop the introduction and start at the beginning.
  • After the newcomer gets acquainted with the environment, he usually returns back to the door checking if the owner has come back. He may cry a little again, scratch the door, but this usually does not take too long.
  • Now comes the moment when he starts to feel more comfortable. Nothing bad is happening to him and there are toys and flurry friends playing happily. Why not to use the waiting time joining them?
  • The owner returns with the question in the eyes: how was he doing? Did not cry too much? He is very attached to me… Actually, not many dogs are crying for too long.
  • Majority of the dogs are doing very well, to be honest, we sometimes (with the approval of the owner) bribe them with some treats. There are a few very scared dogs who may be extremely stressed throughout the assessment. In that case, if we see no signs of aggressive behaviour caused by the stress, we recommend to start using our Guarderia for shorter periods to start with. In all cases so far, the initial fear has been overcome after one or two sessions.

We are taking pictures and making videos to show how the pup was doing. It is a regular activity not only during the initial evaluations but we are sending records to the owners while the dog is left in our care to share the moments with the family.

Let us know if you have more questions regarding the initial evaluations or if you just want to know more about our activity. One of our team members will be happy to go through the process with you.

We look forward to seeing you and your flurry friend soon!

Your Feligos Team

Puppy Classes

2021-02-24T11:19:43+00:00

2 weeks ago we opened the doors to the Guarderia and we are excited to see the first happy returning customers.

Our clients are of different breeds and characters, however we can already see the trend apparent in the streets, which a great proportion of puppies and adolescents. We are happy to see lots of these fluffy creatures  coming from different rescue homes. It is wonderful to see how humans and little dogs are helping each other in hard times.

We are excited to be a part of this phenomenon and help new owners to be able to continue their lives while giving home and love to their new family members.

Guarderia is a great and safe environment for dogs including puppies and adolescents who are usually full of energy, requiring attention, and have needs to walk and eat while their owners are at work or fulfilling social commitments.

Having said that, it is important to stress the fact that the Guarderia is not a substitution to dog trainers. We are dog carers, making sure your pup has  great time, his needs are fulfilled while with us and he has friends and toys to play with. Unfortunately we cannot deal with difficult, extremely scared or unpredictable dogs for the safety of our clients and staff. This is the reason we insist on the initial assessment.

Based on our first experience in Guarderia we have enjoyed a company of absolutely adorable, cute and playful adolescents who have loving human parents. It is wonderful to see them playing together but even games have their rules which these little ones does not yet understand. They have to learn signals other dogs are giving them, not to get into trouble one day. Older and more experienced dogs understand when it is advisable to stop, when a dog is not ready to play or when he simply already has enough. This is why we always watch and control the games. However, these dogs are having their normal life outside Guarderia, they go to pipicans and meet other dogs in the streets and it may not be so safe if they do not learn basics in life.

We are excited to see our young clients  growing into happy dogs and enjoyable company for their owners. To help them achieve this moment in a fun way, we have asked a very experienced professional training couple from Ludocan to lead weekly Puppy classes in our Guarderia. Marta and Carles will teach you basic techniques and explain how to motivate your adolescents between 5 and 12 months to become confident and easy, happy dogs.

We aim to start classes right after the Easter holiday season. Details including a price and schedule will be announced on our website guarderia.feligos.cat soon. If you want more information, please do not hesitate to call us or send us a message.

We look forward to seeing you and your dear dog friends at our Guarderia

Dogs home alone

2021-02-19T18:55:36+00:00

Remember, when you bring a new dog to your home, you’re committing to a very close and long-term relationship. Be sure you have enough time to dedicate to your new family member.

Even if we are completely devoted to our dogs, there are times when we need to leave them alone. We go for work, shopping or have social commitments.

There is no set time which is  acceptable for owners to leave their dogs home alone. It depends on the specific dog, his age, and physical and emotional needs.

But it is very important to bear the basic rules in mind:

  1. Bladder control. Like humans, dogs also need to go out to a toilet. If they are properly house trained, it would be extremely stressful for them to empty their bladder in the house. They feel guilty doing something they know is not correct and next time you are leaving, it will be even worse for them.

It’s advisable to take your dog out just before you leave and then again the first thing when you come back. It is not surprising that puppies and senior dogs need to go out more often.

  1. Emotional needs. If you have a very active dog, he may suffer being home alone for hours without any activity. In that case make sure he is properly walked and played with before you leave, otherwise you may find your flat or house in a serious disorder when you come back and it would not be that much of his fault.

Some dogs love social interaction, others are couch cuddlers and all these differences should be taken in the consideration to determine how long they should be left alone without stressing them too much.

  1. Separation anxiety. This is unfortunately a very common condition and the covid pandemia did not help at all. Nowadays there are many more dogs, even those previously managing well, who suffer with separation anxiety. The reason is that we changed our routine dramatically and spend a lot more time with them at home. Separation anxiety is difficult to deal with and it causes depression, destruction behavior or barking and howling. Not only it is a seriously devastating condition for a dog, it is also very stressful for the dog owner. If you think you cannot deal with it alone, please ask a good dog behaviourist for help.

To summarize, there are some little tricks to make the time alone easier for your dog.

As mentioned before, take him out before you leave and make sure he is not hungry and has plenty of water. He should get access to his favourite toys. Mental puzzle toys to make him busy are also a good idea. Some dogs are happier to keep a piece of clothes of his owner they can smell. It could be an old T-shirt or a sock. Some of the dog owners also recommend to switch on the radio or TV.

You may have a crate trained dog and he may feel comfortable in his own little house. However, we at Feligos are not supporters of cages so we will not comment on this option more.

If you have a new dog, never leave him alone for too long at the beginning. Try shorter period of times so that he knows you always come back. This is especially important if you have a rescue dog who might already have a bad experience of abandoning.

Working all days outside your home? Consider hiring a reliable dog walker or research your local doggy care centres. Your dog will have friends for endless happy plays, humans to interact with and opportunity to go out for toilet. You will get back a happy, mentally and physically stimulated dog, which is, together with your love, all they need.

Why is it important to socialise a puppy?

2021-01-29T08:51:35+00:00

Whether it is your first puppy or you are already an experienced dog owner, you should never underestimate the importance of extensive puppy socialising.

Your puppy is now discovering the world and imprints all the new experience in his behaviour pattern and a proper socialising is the best thing you can do for him. Your happy and confident dog will be the best reward for your efforts.

The early experience will become a part of their personality. Puppies have what is called a ‘critical socialisation period’ between approximately 3 -17 weeks of age. The puppy’s experiences during this critical period of learning and development can influence and shape their behaviour well into adulthood.

Habituation is a part of socialisation process and is crucial for a healthy development of your dog friend. Get him used to all sorts of domestic and outside sights, noises, like vacuum cleaner, TV, music, cars, trains, bicycles, lawnmawers etc.  Take your puppy everywhere you can and expose him to all the daily situations to prevent later fear.  You will be surprised how quickly he picks it up! The earlier the dog gets used to all the noises, sounds and smells, the more likely he does not develop fear aggression or anxiety from the unknown.

Socialisation with people and other dogs is the most important part of understanding the world. Invite your friends home to see your new puppy, go and see them in their houses, let him smell different scents, listen to your laughs and music. However, be careful and don’t force your puppy too harsh. Leave him to slowly sniff around and observe. Some puppies, like people, don’t jump in the middle of the show immediately, they need time to understand that there is nothing to be afraid of.

As soon as it is possible and your pet gets through the vaccination process, without any delay start carefully introducing him to other dogs and animals, if you have other pets in the household or farm animals. Doing so in a secure environment with other puppies and well behaved adult dogs, is the best idea.

Your puppy needs to understand the dogs communication and believe me, there is a lot more in it that we can ever appreciate! He will soon know how to politely greet other dogs without jumping or barking at them, because this is not what polite dogs do! He will understand when it is safe to come close, when a dog asks him to play. He will also find out when it is better to step back because the other dog is not in a playing mood or just not well socialised. He needs to understand these signals for his own security. You will see, there is a lot of fun seeing your little puppy discovering the world! Let him do it.

Failing enabling your dog going through this process as a puppy, you are asking for trouble. Not only you will not enjoy walking a scared or aggressive dog barking at everyone but you will spend many years with an unhappy, fearful or aggressive dog. This is not why you decided to have a pet, right?

Well, it is all up to you. Have a look around, ask yourself if there is not more you can do with your puppy and see if there are classes available where your baby can start socialising in a secure environment.

It looks like the owners of small breeds are more reluctant to socialise and train their dogs. There are too small to play with bigger adult crazy dogs, aren’t they? And it is easy to pick them up or lift them up on the leash if need be, right? You are completely wrong if you think so. Every dog needs company, every dog needs to understand the mates from the same species and has right to play. Think about the well being of your puppy and enjoy the best company the confident dog can be.
